Levine, G. C. (2012). Forgive
me, I meant to do it: false apology poems. New York: Harper.
Reading level: Not levelable
Interest level: Grades 3 - 8
Based on William Carlos Williams’ poem “This Is Just
to Say,” “Forgive Me, I Meant to Do It” presents the reader with Gail Carson
Levine’s many iterations on the idea of a false apology poem. Illustrated with
Silverstein-esque line drawings, the poetry compilation maintains a playful,
irreverent tone. Each poem has three stanzas of four lines. This consistency of
form makes it easy to use as a template for students.
