Egielski, R. (2011). The sleepless little vampire. New York: Arthur A. Levine Books.

Cute, rounded images alongside bright pastels take all the bite out of this vampire-themed poetry book written and illustrated by Richard Egielski. Even the cockroaches are adorable, and I hate roaches with the heat of 1000 fiery suns. The adorable, eponymous little vampire has a problem: he can’t sleep. Egielski explores the many possible causes of his wakeful evening: booing ghosts, cackling witches, clacking bones all collaborate to keep this vampire from rest. My copy featured glossy, black pages with white, serif text, contributing to a creepy mood. Told in rhyming couplets, this book would make a fun Halloween read aloud or a quirky contribution to a unit on onomatopoeia.
