Children's Fantasy: Funnybones

Ahlberg, J., & Ahlberg, A. (1980). Funnybones. New York: Greenwillow Books.

Reading Level: AD530L
Interest Level: Grades K - 2

In this work of fantasy fiction, two bored skeletons (a big skeleton and a little skeleton) who live on a “dark, dark street” in a “dark, dark cellar” decide to find a couple of targets to scare, so they head to the local “dark, dark park.” Naturally, they get distracted almost immediately and begin throwing a stick to their skeletal puppy. One bad stick throw later, and the canine crashes into a tree and crumbles into a pile of mismatched bones. The skeletons attempt to reassemble the dog, singing this song:

“The toe bone’s connected to the foot bone,
The foot bone’s connected to the leg bone,
The leg bone’s connected to the hip bone,
The hip bone’s connected to the back bone.”

They eventually reassemble the skeleton dog, and head home. The skeletons never do find someone to scare, but In the classroom, you could use this in a lower elementary science unit to introduce the concept of human skeletons. You could also talk about fear, and what makes us scared.

Like the other books in this list about skeletons/scary figures, the skeletons are all rounded and the illustrator uses primary colors to keep the tone bright and friendly.
